About the Director

We are delighted about the opportunity to work with Rev. Jaime J. Romo, Ed.D. as the Director of this conference.  A native Californian raised in Northeast Los Angeles, Dr. Romo is currently a pastoral counselor and consultant at Seaport Home Heath and Hospice and a bilingual trauma incident reduction (TIR) facilitator in private practice in San Diego.  His role is to help people see and solve individual and systemic problems and become transformational leaders and followers.  He is also President of the Child Friendly Faith Project, a national social change effort to abolish child maltreatment and increase faith based organizational coherence and vitality, as well as the Minister for Healing and Healthy Environments at Pilgrim United Church of Christ.

Dr. Romo is a pastoral care specialist, educator and organizational consultant with 20+ years experience helping individuals and organizations maximize their effectiveness across academic and nonacademic settings.  He has prepared leaders to serve in complex international, local and global communities.  He applies K-16 experience with excellent listening, creative and group consulting skills to the task of promoting trauma resolution and personal and organizational growth.  He is known for his speaking engagements, advancing multicultural competency, equity and inclusivity.  He holds a passion for social justice.

His scholarship has focused on developing effective and responsive policies, curricula and practices, as well as psycho-educational program development related to multicultural identities in teaching and learning in the San Diego-Tijuana geo-political border region, as well as how institutional and interpersonal trauma impacts mental, physical and behavioral health.  Dr. Romo is the lead author of Toward Cultural Democracy: The Journey from Knowledge to Action in Diverse Classrooms and Reclaiming Democracy: Multicultural Educators’ Journeys toward Transformative Teaching, as well as various articles on educational equity and inclusion.

Dr. Romo specializes in understanding the hidden dynamics of organizations, integrative change processes, trauma informed care, healing and spirituality, as well as issues around male identity.  While his academic publications illustrate the specialized research skills he brings to understanding individual and organizational change, a workbook he has written speaks most directly to the integration of his experiences, abilities, and values: Healing the Sexually Abused  Heart: A Workbook for Survivors, Thrivers, and Supporters.

Dr. Romo obtained his Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from University of San Diego in 1998 where he completed his thesis, “Voices Against Discrimination and Exclusion: Latino School Leaders’ Narrative for Change.”  He has several years of experience working as a consultant to group relations curriculum on college campuses.  He is a member and certified professional consultant of the A.K .Rice Institute for the Study of Social Systems (AKRI), as a well as member of Grex, the west coast affiliate of AKRI.  Dr. Romo will be joined by a team of professional consultants in our work together for this conference.
